A Mama for Owen by by Marion Dane Bauer, il. by John Butler

This great book, A Mama for Owen by by Marion Dane Bauer, illustrated by John Butler, shows you that you don’t have to be afraid to show emotions. It also shows you that you can depend on somebody and love them. This book tells about a great wave that washed Owen’s family away in a river. Owen the baby hippopotamus, luckily, got washed on shore.  Owen saw a brownish-gray thing and thought it was his mama, but it was a tortoise named Mzee. Owen and Mzee were very good friends. They eat, sleep, and play together. They were friends forever.

This review was written by Russell, a sixth grade student in Mrs. Simmons’ classroom.

  1. I think it is a good book because you do not have to afraid of to show your self emotions. It also says in the book that you can also depend on someone else. Owen had to get washed on the shore.
